Succession begins in New York City in August ‘63 with the US expecting to be out of Vietnam by December ’65, and ends in August ’64 at the time of the attack on the Maddox.

Jake Garrison has quit his career as a liquidator of failing businesses to write a book that will preserve the memories of his father, a battlefield surgeon in World War I, and his grandfather, an officer in the Army of the Potomac.

Jake and his wife, Diana, are childless. She heads a division of Colepool Publishers.

Garrison’s father begins bleeding internally and must be hospitalized, but has no money. He asks Garrison for drops to kill him fast—dignity still intact.

Garrison goes to Charles Carnusty, whom he suspects of being Diana’s lover, to borrow money to pay his father’s bills. Carnusty persuades him to help liquidate Kensington, a typewriter company squeezed between low cost Asian products and IBM-computer technology.

Diana and Garrison grow farther apart. Unexpectedly. Diana becomes pregnant. Garrison suspects Carnusty is the father.

It was the summer of 1950 in Taneytown, Alabama, and what started out as a childish game quickly turned tragic when Maggie Green’s playmate Angel disappeared. Maggie lied to her parents and the police about where they had been playing to protect another friend. That lie would haunt her long after she and her brother discovered Angel’s lifeless body in the woods.

Sensing that their way of life would never be as innocent and carefree again, Maggie and her friends struggled to comprehend who in their town could commit such a brutal crime. Frustrated and scared residents voiced prejudices and hurled accusations against odd town characters, including the Walking Man and Maggie’s trusted friend, Mozell, the old Negro woman who lived in the river bottoms. But Maggie soon learned that good and evil can be found in many forms—few of them obvious or predictable.

Five decades later, Maggie heads back to her hometown. Memories of the past instantly flood her mind: the smell of red clay, the coolness of the Cahaba River, and the calls of mockingbirds take her back to that hot summer when she made a promise that would take a lifetime to fulfill …

<span style="font-size: 12pt; font-family: "Times New Roman","serif"">It’s 2022, a decade after a devastating computer virus was unleashed upon America and the world. Civilization has crumbled in an economic collapse that rivals the Great Depression of the previous century. During this harsh decade, the schism between those who think technology will save the world and those who believe it to be the tool of Lucifer has reached a boiling point. The Church of Natural Humans, led by the charismatic ADAM JORDAN, is determined to roll civilization back to a pre-computer era. His beautiful African-American lover, MOESHA JEFFERSON, leads the Army of God, a cult of fanatics within the Church, in a series of murders of anyone they consider a technologist.

<span style="font-size: 12pt; font-family: "Times New Roman","serif"">DAVID BROWN, the gifted but troubled son of one of the most hated of criminals, receives a delayed email from his long dead father, the software genius RAY BROWN. The world believes that David’s father unleashed the computer virus that caused the death of more than a million people and led to the global depression, but the email suggests that his father was on the trail of the real criminals. David has grown up in a hostile atmosphere due to his father’s crimes, so he resolves to discover who his father was, and if he really was to blame for the virus. His only memories are of a man made erratic by too much alcohol and driven by his passion for technology.

<span style="font-size: 12pt; font-family: "Times New Roman","serif"">DIANNE MORGAN is a ruthless woman. She leads the Domain, a secret society of technologists developing Sentinel, an artificial intelligence with the ability to seize control of the Internet and all other computers. Needing money and muscle to achieve her obsession for power, Dianne enters into a partnership with organized crime, led by MARIA VITULLO. Vitullo, it is rumored, seized power within the Families by murdering her uncle, the former Don. Vitullo controls the technology black market for the Domain, as well as providing soldiers in the war against the Army of God.

<span style="font-size: 12pt; font-family: "Times New Roman","serif"">As David tracks through his father’s startling history, he stumbles into this hidden war. Fearing that he will expose the Domain, Dianne orders Vitullo to kill him. However, Moesha has her own plan: to keep David alive so she can follow his trail to the Domain and then eliminate all the technologists. Hunted by killers from both organizations, David unravels his father’s secrets, comes to terms with his own life, and then falls in love with a woman from his father’s past.

New Jersey native Greg Mandell, a rookie reporter for the Ocean Republic, accepts an assignment to cover the Parent’s Alliance for Schools and Teachers (PAST) and the state’s public hearings on sex education. Formed to stop sex education, PAST has influenced the election of three hundred like-minded candidates to school boards across the Garden State.

While on assignment, Mandell falls for Andi Gilardi, a popular history teacher up for tenure at Mandell’s alma mater, Averdell High School. Mandell’s respect and affection for Gilardi forces him to make a choice between his professional objectivity and his personal integrity.

One year later, she opened Beauty and the Book, the world’s only combination beauty salon/bookstore. Soon after, she founded The Pulpwood Queens of East Texas — a reading group that dared to ask the question, “Does a book club have to be snobby to be serious?” The idea spread like wildfire. Now there are about 70 chapters nationwide. The overriding rule — aside from wearing the club’s official tiara, hot pink, and leopard print outfits — is that the groups must have fun. The club’s mission: To get America reading.THE PULPWOOD QUEENS’ TIARA-WEARING, BOOK- SHARING GUIDE TO LIFE celebrates female friendship, sisterhood, and the transformative power of reading. It includes life principles and motivational anecdotes, hilarious and heart-warming stories of friendships among the Queens, and stories from Kathy about the books that have inspired her throughout her life, complete with personalized suggested book lists.

“The gathering of the ravens presages a disturbance of the natural order.” Attorney Harry Jenkins is back in A Trial of One, the final installment of the unsolved saga started in Mary E. Martin’s Conduct in Question and continued in Final Paradox. Jenkins is on a frantic search for shares of Elixicorp Enterprises stock, worth over thirty million dollars, for his elderly client, Norma Dinnick. The shares were originally sold to raise money for research into memory loss in seniors. Ironically, no one seems to remember just where the shares might be. Pursuing Jenkins through Toronto and London, and to the darkened, narrow calles of Venice, is Dr. Robert Hawke, a sinister madman who claims to have the cure for Alzheimer’s disease. As their chase unravels a decades-old fraud, yet another search is underway for the mysterious Q. Dorothy Crawford, widow of Jenkins’ law partner Richard Crawford, believes Q, a jealous lover or angry husband, has murdered her husband. With its memorable characters and vivid landscapes, along with author Mary E. Martin’s signature blend of humor and suspense, A Trial of One delivers an ultimately satisfying conclusion to the Osgoode Trilogy.

There’s no contesting the fact that Steve, Paul, and Ralph Colwell and Herb Allen lived adventurous lives. As musicians, they toured in the farthest corners of the world, performing from the White House to the Super Bowl, from Watts to Carnegie Hall. Yet millions who have seen them know little or nothing of the astounding story of their lives.

The Colwells, city boys from San Marino, California, strummed and sung their way onto bluegrass and country stages at ages fourteen, twelve, and ten. They were picked up as performers by radio and TV stations in the Midwest and startled the “old boys” by winning the Renfro Valley Hillbilly Band Contest in Kentucky. Soon they were regulars on radio and TV programs in Southern California, and are said to have been the youngest trio under contract with a major label, Columbia Records.

Herb Allen was a child prodigy. He conducted the Seattle Baby Orchestra at age four, became an accomplished keyboard player and percussionist, and had his own dance band in high school. He was a student of classical piano and was accepted by the prestigious Oberlin School of Music.

After high school graduation, Allen launched into an adventure that would catapult him into the theaters of post-World War II Europe. He was young, the Colwell Brothers even younger, and the eyes of the world were on their generation. In the decade that followed, through an extraordinary mix of decision, courage, and commitment, the world became their stage.

The Colwells and Allen preceded the baby boomer generation by ten to twenty years. They were not old enough to fight in World War II and were too old to be drafted for the Vietnam War. (The fourth Colwell brother, Ted, eight years younger than Ralph, served in Vietnam.) Allen was called up during the Korean War, but received a deferment. Steve, Paul, Ralph, and Herb were part of the so-called “ quiet generation,” not expected to stir things up very much. As it turned out, they were anything but “quiet.”

In the ‘40s and ‘50s, they left careers, sweethearts, and family behind and set sail for the far corners of the world. Their adventures and experiences uniquely prepared them to ride the whirlwind of the 1960s.

Youth dominated the headlines of the sixties with marches, sit-ins, protests, and great new music. No one over thirty could be trusted. Traditions and mores that had bound society for centuries were shaking loose. American youth were gripped by a new idealism, much of it inspired by John Kennedy’s challenge, “Ask not what your country can do for you; ask what you can do for your country.” This new idealism drew thousands of young people to take up the challenge of Modernizing America, the theme of mid-decade student leadership conferences at Michigan’s Mackinac Island where Up with People was born.

The Colwells and Allen arrived at the first Michigan conference in 1964 after working in Europe, Asia, and Africa for more than a decade. They had played and sung in areas of tension and crisis in dozens of countries. No one at the conference was aware of how much sweat, grit, fatigue, and sacrifice had gone into those globe-spanning years. This is the story of their roots, of the passion behind the birth of Up with People, and living proof of the power of music.
